What every woman needs in her jewelry box: style advice from the pros

By pulling colors together, accentuating a garment detail or adding a focal point, the right jewelry can bring your outfit to a new level. We asked local experts, including wardrobe consultant and personal stylist Mayna Sgaramella and style editor and personal stylist Hope Misterik, for their advice on what pieces every woman should have in her jewelry box to complement her wardrobe.
First, they say, when you're building up your jewelry collection, consider your lifestyle and budget, as well as your skin tone. Warm tones pair best with gold, while cool tones pop with silver or platinum. Then, from head to toe (or, rather, ears to fingers), choose from the following pieces to ensure you’re equipped for any accessorizing challenge.
Statement earrings
Having a pair of oversized statement earrings will pull attention to your face and jawbone. Gold flower earrings ($7.99) from Cost Plus World Market have a lovely texture and hang at a wonderful height, close to the face, while still having an exaggerated, interesting shape. (And you can't argue with the price.)
Natural stone earrings
Seattle boasts many talented jewelry designers who use organic elements in their work. The texture and color of natural stones, woods and gemstones pair beautifully with the casual fabrics we often wear in the Emerald City. Local label Dotted Line Jewels, for example, creates eye-catching jewelry, like the gold-filled, wire-wrapped earrings in an enchanting, teardrop shape, accented with prehnite briolettes ($110).
Classic hoops
Simple, understated hoops are a great, everyday piece of jewelry that you can balance with a larger necklace or other bold pieces. Macy’s is a great resource for classic hoop and stud sets ($70) that can often be bought on sale. If you already have a small simple pair, invest in hoop earrings with a bit more personality. The intricate, handcrafted Lois Hill Classic Large Woven Hoop earrings ($158), available at Nordstrom.com, are a great investment. The Silver Sea Fan hoops ($550) by Annette Ferdinandsen, available at Twist in Pacific Place, are standouts that will add intrigue for years to come.
Statement ring
Choosing a bold, statement ring is a great way to show some personality and adds interest to your hands. Local designer Kimberly Baker's hand-carved, rock-n-roll Wolfette ring ($220 in sterling silver) is a lovely high-impact piece that carries some weight and wears well with denim. Though Madrona jewelry store Hitchcock is closed until early November (for the owner's maternity leave), keep it on your list as a great resource for all types of statement jewelry, including stunning, oversized druzy quartz rings ($239).
Bangle bracelet
Choosing a big bangle, or layers of several thinner bangles, is a great way to add an interesting shape to a delicate wrist. You can push a larger bangle up on your forearm or bicep for a great, modern styling twist. Vintage bangles are available at Pacific Galleries, or layer two or three Hex bracelets ($40) by local jewelry designer Sarah Loertscher, available at Belltown's Fancy, for an interesting effect.
Statement watch
A large statement watch will add a great bit of masculine styling to any look. Belltown men's and women's boutique Kuhlman is a great resource for watches, like the Shutter by Nixon ($110), that will add a little punch to your day-to-day look.
Meaningful, layering pendants
Layering a few smaller pendants or amulets that are meaningful to you is a great way to add a bit of interest at your neckline. Alexander’s Bead Bazaar on Roosevelt Way is a great resource for charms or beads that you can wear alone or string together to create a dramatic, self-expressive effect. Or, make a wish on the white-gold "a belief" charm, which hangs on a silk thread necklace ($52). The idea is to bring good energy to the wish you are focusing on, until the thread breaks and your wish is fulfilled.
Statement necklace
Pairing a sheath dress or shapely little black dress with a bold necklace is a great look. Local jewelry sources Rhinestone Rosie and Abaloria have interesting one-of-a-kind statement necklaces, like the Olivia Necklace ($390) by Abaloria, that will take any outfit to a whole new level.
Pearls
Whether a woman is 16 or 60, pearls are always a chic choice. If you’re looking for youthful styling, layer them at any length. Going demure? Choose a short strand. If it’s your first strand of pearls, start with a creamy white strand, like the Celebrity necklace ($119) by Fifth Avenue Collection. If you’ve got a classic strand and are looking for a new set of pearls, try the modern Rose Pearl Necklace ($39.50) at Ann Taylor Loft.
Versatile layering necklace
A must this year is a strand of beads that you can easily layer on top of a variety of dresses and tops to create a flattering, lengthening effect. Nordstrom.com has a wide selection of long layering necklaces under $100 to choose from, including the Metallic Bead Extra Long Necklace ($58), a great, hand-strung piece with faceted beads that can dress up a casual look or go glam for evening.
Special occasion pendant
A special occasion pendant that can be passed down from generation to generation as an heirloom piece is a lovely piece of jewelry to own. The Owl and The Pussy Cat Children's Music Box

Another favorite classic children's music box now back in stock!

This cheerful music box designed for both boys and girls plays Pachelbel Canon and is inspired by "The Owl and the Pussycat", a famous nonsense poem by Edward Lear (original illustration is shown below), first published in 1871. Lear wrote the poem for a young girl, Janet Symonds, the daughter of Lear's friend, the poet John Addington Symonds and his wife Catherine. Its most notable historical feature is the coinage of the term runcible spoon. It features four anthropomorphised animals (the owl, the pussycat, the 'piggy-wig' and a turkey) and revolves around the love between the title characters, who are married by the turkey in the third and final stanza.
It goes like this..........

The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea

In a beautiful pea-green boat,

They took some honey, and plenty of money,

Wrapped up in a five pound note.

The Owl looked up to the stars above,

And sang to a small guitar,

"O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,

What a beautiful Pussy you are, you are, you are,

What a beautiful Pussy you are."

Pussy said to the Owl "You elegant fowl,

How charmingly sweet you sing.

O let us be married, too long we have tarried;

But what shall we do for a ring?"

They sailed away, for a year and a day,

To the land where the Bong-tree grows,

And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood

With a ring at the end of his nose, his nose, his nose,

With a ring at the end of his nose.

More about the history of this delightful poem from wikipedia:

  • The story has been set to music and animated many times, including by Igor Stravinsky, Burl Ives and by Laurie Anderson.1952 cartoon by Halas and Batchelor.
  • A version was composed by Elton Hayes in 1948 and was recorded in 1953 by Parlophone. It became a regular item on Children's Favourites.
  • It was the central focus for a 1968 children's musical play about Lear's nonsense poems, entitled "The Owl and the Pussycat went to see". The play was written by Sheila Ruskin and David Wood.
  • The title was borrowed for an unrelated stage play and subsequent 1970 movie starring Barbra Streisand and George Segal.
  • Igor Stravinsky set it to music in 1966. A recording of the work was made under the supervision of the composer and is available on Sony's 'Stravinsky Edition'.
  • In 1971, a cartoon based on the poem was made by Weston Woods.
  • In the 1968 Disney animated feature Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, later a part of 1977's The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, the character Owl mentions a relative of his who supposedly "went to sea in a pea-green boat" with a Pussycat.
  • The two main characters were the inspiration for X the Owl and Henrietta Pussycat in the "Neighborhood of Make-Believe" from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.
  • Laurie Anderson composed and recorded a version titled Beautiful Pea Green Boat that appeared on her 1994 album Bright Red.
  • Eric Idle, a former member of Monty Python's Flying Circus, wrote a children's book entitled The Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat which was based on the poem. It is an extended story about when the Owl and the Pussycat were attacked by a band of ruthless rats who were out to steal pies. It was illustrated by Wesla Weller and was first published in 1996 with an audio version which included some songs by Idle himself.
  • In a musical album of the show Bananas in Pyjamas, the story of The Owl and the Pussycat was sang as a rap song.

Pearl Care and Jewelry Storage


Pearls are prized for their natural beauty and require proper storage and care to retain their natural luster. It's important to store pearls in a dedicated jewelry box, a soft cloth pouch, or in a lined jewelry compartment in your larger jewelry box where they will not come into contact with other jewelry.

Since pearls are an organic gemstone they require moisture to keep them from becoming dry and brittle. If your pearls are stored in a closed box, take them out periodically to avoid dehydration.

Pearls should not be stored in plastic, near heat, or near other hard jewelry items that could scratch them. Never leave them in direct sunlight or expose them to high temperatures. Pearl jewelry should always be removed before using household detergents like laundry soap or dishwasher soap.

While wearing your pearls, perfume and hairspray should not be used because the alcohol and harmful acids can damage them. Perspiration can also harm the beauty of pearls, dulling their beautiful luster. They should be wiped with a damp (not wet) cloth after each wear. Avoid conventional jewelry cloths that are chemically treated. They contain harsh chemicals that could damage the surface of the pearl. Use only cleaning products and cloths designed specifically for cleaning pearls.

To keep your pearls clean, wash them with a cloth dipped in mild detergent and water, or with a cleaner made specifically for pearls. Then, dampen a cloth with water only and wipe the pearls again. The pearls should be lain flat, not hung, to dry. If the string is wet, hanging them could cause it to stretch. Never wear your pearls while the string is damp or wet.

The silk string of your pearl strand will need to be replaced over time. Take them to a professional jeweler for restringing. Be careful not to get pearl strands wet or wear them while swimming or bathing, because water can weaken and stretch the silk thread.

Pearls will continue to be a favorite jewelry choice, complimenting both classic and contemporary styles. With proper storage and cleaning, they will retain their natural beauty for years to come.

September's Birthstone - Sapphire

The birthstone for those born in September is Sapphire, available in a wide variety of colors. The most popular is blue. Sapphire is a form of corundum. Any color of corundum except red is called sapphire.

Sapphires have been prized for their beauty since ancient times when Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire whose reflection gave the sky its color. It was also believed that sapphire would protect the wearer from envy and attract divine favor. Sapphire is mentioned in the Bible as being one of the twelve “stones of fire” (Ezekiel 28:13–16) that were given to Moses and set in the breastplate of Aaron (Exodus 28:15–30). Sapphire is also one of the twelve gemstones set in the foundations of the city walls of Jerusalem (Revelations 21:19).

Sapphires are a durable gem, second only to diamonds in terms of the hardness of the stone. Because of this, they are easy-care stones which do not scratch or mar easily. Their value depends on color, transparency, and size.

Sapphires are found here in the U.S.A. in North Carolina and Montana. Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, India, China, Brazil and Australia are well known for Sapphire production. China yields the majority of the sapphires that are a very deep midnight blue or black color. The lighter cornflower blue shade is mined mainly in the Australian regions, as well as in Sri Lanka and Burma. Sri Lanka and China also yield most of the golden sapphires found. The rare pink and orange sapphires are mined mostly in Madagascar and Sri Lanka.

Since the sapphire is most often linked to qualities of loyalty, faithfulness and honesty it is a favorite choice for engagement rings. Sapphires gained increasing popularity in modern times when Prince Charles presented an oval sapphire surrounded by fourteen diamonds to Lady Diana for their engagement.

The phenomenon known as the "star" on some sapphires is caused by intersecting light bands on the stone which create the illusion of a star reflection. The popular star sapphire has historically been thought of as a love charm throughout many cultures. It is said that Helen of Troy attributed her battle conquests to a star sapphire that she owned. The bands of light across the stone that created the starlike appearance were said to represent destiny and hope in other societies.
