How to Clean Men's Metal Cufflinks

Mens cufflinks are a fashion item that never goes out of style. Usually seen on men that are dressing up for a special event in a tuxedo or beautifully made suit, dress shirts with French cuffs call for handsome cufflinks. Although highly traditional, this style of shirt is very elegant and can make the outfit and the man.

Caring for cufflinks will depend on the metal. Since there are so many types of cufflinks, this is Part I, focusing on the solid metals. Cufflinks should be cleaned regularly and stored in a jewelry box, men's valet or in a specially made box that stores cufflinks. Take time to clean them regularly and store them properly and your cufflinks will look pristine for a very long time.

Here is how to care for your solid metal cufflinks quickly and easily.

Sterling Silver Cufflinks - Mix up a solution of 2-3 drops of a mild liquid dish washing soap with 1/2 cup of tap water. Use a soft brush or cotton cleaning cloth and clean away any dirt and debris. Rinse completely and towel dry with a soft cotton cloth. If your cufflinks have tarnish to the metal you will need to use and anti-tarnish polishing cloth to remove it and to polish them up.

Genuine Gold Cufflinks - Purchase a commercial jewelry cleaner that is made specifically for genuine gold jewelry. Follow the directions on the packaging and clean accordingly. If this makes you nervous or you just don't have the time to clean them, you can take them to your local jeweler and have them clean the cufflinks professionally for you.

Stainless Steel Cufflinks - Make a solution of water and mild dish washing soap (2-3 drops of liquid soap and 1/2 cup of tap water) and use a soft brush or clean cloth to remove the debris and dirt. Rinse completely and towel dry.

Barbara Bush's Famous First Lady Pearls

Sometimes jewelry styles and trends are made famous by the women that wear them. Barbara Bush is remembered for always wearing what has become known as the First Lady Pearls. The particular style she wore often was a 3 strand of costume pearls. Many jewelry designers copied her famous pearl necklace calling it "First Lady Pearls" and sold replicas in the retail marketplace.

When she first became First Lady of the United States other necklace styles were more popular but since she loved her costume pearls and wore them often, faux pearl necklaces became the hot, new, must-have jewelry accessories during those 4 years. She wore her "First Lady Pearls" with various business suits, both slacks and skirt suits and formal wear. When Mrs. Bush wore her famous pearl necklace, she often paired it up with a pair of single stud earrings.

Barbara Bush's main cause was improving literacy and would often be photographed wearing her First Lady Pearls while doing her work for these special literacy projects. She also embraced those who were suffering with AIDS, the HIV virus. Wife of one President and mother of another, Barbara Bush was the "First Lady of the United States" for 4 years and is married to former President George H.W Bush. She was one of the most popular first ladies and is highly admired and respected. She was first lady from 1988 through 1992.

Today, faux pearls strands are still a fashion basic accessory as well as many of the fresh water pearls that you can find in a range of different hues. It is nice to know that some jewelry trends always remain in style and you can fall back on your favorites as needed.

What is Morganite?

There are so many beautiful semi-precious gemstones that are affordable and make a lovely gift for someone special. Wouldn't you love to unwrap a lovely jewelry box or trinket box with a fabulous semi-precious stone set just for you? Read on to learn more about the gorgeous Morganite.

The beautiful stone called Morganite is a gemstone from the beryl family of stones. The best known beryl gemstones are the Emerald and the Aquamarine but the Morganite is just as beautiful.  It was first discovered on an island on the coast of Madagascar in 1910 and the New York acadamy of sciences named it after American banker and gem collector, JP Morgan.

The Morganite gem is known for its pink color which women around the world just love since many gems don't come in this shade of pink.  Colors range from a light pink to soft peach. When shopping for Morganite, you will find this semi-precious gemstone set in fine sterling silver, gold, and platinum and sometimes in stainless steel settings. No matter how it is set, it will be a stunning piece that will surely be admired by many.

Morganite is a strong and hearty gemstone coming in on the hardness scale from 7.5 to 8.0 so it is one of the perfect gems for jewelry making. The majority of this stone is mined in Brazil, Afghanistan, Madagascar and you can find it being mined in the United States in certain parts of California. The largest gem morganite specimens ever uncovered were found in Maine, weighing just over 50 lbs.

When wearing Morganite jewelry you want to take some care with wearing it by not wearing it while bathing, showering, swimming, washing your hands or while cleaning. You want to protect it from chemicals, cosmetics and other harmful things found in our environment.

To clean your Morganite gemstone jewelry you will want to use a professional jewelry cleaner or take it to you jeweler for cleaning. You can use a soft jeweler's cleaning cloth to polish the metal that your gemstone is set into but take great care not to rub too hard so that you don't loosen the stone from it's setting.

If pink is perfect for you, you'll love Morganite!

Mens Tribal Bracelet Trend

This winter season we are seeing a huge trend in young men's jewelry which as a big Tribal influence. Although we are seeing this trend primarily with young men, you can also find many middle-aged men wearing these great looking bracelets. They are very hot with musicians too!

The Tribal bracelets are primarily in silver metals like sterling silver and stainless steel metals. Combined with leather, these bracelets are very popular this year with the guys. They are comfortable and good looking. Check out what's hot and what's not with Tribal bracelets and even some specialty watches for men.

Hot Tribal Bracelets:

*Cuff bracelets that are trimmed or accented with brown or black braided leather.
*Cuff or chain bracelets accented with crosses or other religious symbols.
*Wide band leather bracelets with one large silver medallion on the front that has a tribal design engraved onto it.
*Wide unique chain link bracelets in sterling silver or stainless steel.
*This sterling silver or stainless steel chain bracelets with skulls and skull with bone designs.
*Round black bead bracelets with one dangling charm made from sterling silver or stainless steel.
*Watches with big watch faces done in a wide braided leather band.
*Watches done in a black plated metal with a big watch face.

Leather on men just seems to work so well and it wears very well too. Incorporate some metals and you have an awesome looking bracelet. Be careful when storing these and be sure the metals do not come into contact with watch faces or other jewelry items as it will scratch or damage the other item. Use a nice valet box or watch box to secure your special items and protect them for long lasting wear.

Mens Tribal Ring Trend

This winter season we are seeing a huge trend with young men who are enjoying the Tribal look when it comes to their jewelry, especially rings! We are seeing this trend all over Hollywood and in New York and now it is spreading all over the United States. While we are seeing this trend mostly with young men there are some middle-aged men who still like to be trendy with their jewelry choices.

This trend is primarily found in silver metals like sterling silver and stainless steel. You will find men's rings at all price points so anyone can enjoy the style. Here are some choices that are leading this trend of Tribal rings this season.

* Chunky sterling silver or stainless steel band rings that are accented around the edges with black plating.

* Wide band sterling silver and stainless steel rings that are heavily engraved in vines, leaves and other nature symbols and designs.

*Rings that are done in any type of cross or cross bones design is big with this trend.

* Black metal wide band rings with engraved designs are very popular with the middle-aged drwos who like this style of jewelry.

* Big, bold rings with black onyx done in the tribal style are also very popular. The bigger and bolder the ring is, the more the statement piece it is.

* Big, bold rings done with a Fleur de lis design is hot, hot, hot.

Tip: When wearing a big bold Tribal ring, it is best to keep it to only to one or two per hand. You don't want to fill up each finger with a big, bold ring!

Guys, find a few of your favorites online and enjoy this trend. I think it will be around a bit so you can enjoy your favorite rings for quite a while.

What does it Mean to Have Your Gemstone Trillion Cut?

When selecting gemstones one of the things you have to decide is the type of cut you enjoy wearing. You are probably familiar with the Emerald Cut of the Princess Cut. Let's look at one that you may not be familiar with; the Trillion Cut.

Both Precious and Semi-Precious gemstones can be cut in the Trillion Cut. This cut originated in Amsterdam, Holland and is often used in the side stones that accent a solitaire. You can also find trillion cut center stones or solitaires. The trillion cut is popular because it catches the light well and give the gemstone a lot of sparkle and shine due to all of the faceting that goes on with the trillion cut.

Trillion cut stones are triangular in shape with rounded corners. A trillion cut gemstone or diamond has 25 facets above the girdle and 19 facets on the pavilion. A gemstone has to be near perfect for it to be suitable for a trillion cut because this type of cut will show any imperfections and flaws that are within the gemstone.

If you have selected this shape of stone in your jewelry pieces, you will want to make sure that they are stable in the jewelry setting because corners can ship or crack during normal wear if they are not set properly and have protective corner settings. Make a habit to check your setting and stones each time you clean your jewelry piece.

While the trillion cut is considered to be a fancy cut in a gemstone or diamond, it doesn't mean that they aren't affordable. This cut is very popular and can be used in any of your gemstones and most likely you already have this cut in your jewelry box now.

The Perfect Gift for the Watch Collector

We all know how hard it is to find the perfect gift for someone who seems to have everything. Nothing seems right or is a duplicate item to something they already have. And for women, we all know how difficult it can be to find a gift for our men. It can be so frustrating! But for the watch collector in your life, Chasing Treasure has a great gift item that you are going to love giving!

The Watch Winder is a very neat concept for those that love watches and own a lot of them. There are some automatic watch styles that work from the movement of your wrist and the analog watches are wound from impulses in your arm when they are being worn. A watch winder box is great for these types of watches that need movement to keep them in working order so they are available to be worn all the time, displaying the precise time.

Since watch collectors cannot wear every watch they own every day, the automatic and analog watches may wear down and the mechanisms inside can stop the watch. The Watch Winder is a lovely box that automatically rotates the watch side to side for you on a turntable. Many of these boxes even have timers so you can set them to move at a specific amount of time on a daily basis.

Our Watch Winder boxes are gorgeous pieces made from premium grade woods, polished in high gloss finishes. There are single watch winders and double cases too.  We also offer a beautiful leather case that holds four watches for storage as well as the watch winder. It is a fabulous German crafted piece that any watch lover would be thrilled to own.

When a gift for a hard to please person now comes up on your gift list, take a look at Chasing Treasure and the unique selection of gorgeous watch winders and storage cases.  Impressive!

Tips for Keeping Your Stainless Steel Watches Clean

When looking for a good watch to purchase for yourself or as a gift you should look for watches made from stainless steel because stainless steel is scratch resistant and durable. If properly taken care of, a stainless steel watch should last you for several years.

Many men and women love watches as a fashion accessory and collect watches in various colors, shapes and sizes. To protect your watch collection, invest in a good watch box for safe keeping and to keep your watches clean and ready to be worn at any time.

You will want to take the time to clean your watches properly on a regular basis. One important tip is that you should never use water to clean them. For light cleaning you can use a soft cotton cloth or jeweler's cloth to remove light dirt and debris. If you have dirt and grime in the crevices of your watch band or around the face you can use a child's soft bristled toothbrush but use it dry...not wet.

If your watch face has fingerprints, cosmetics or perfume on it that you need to remove you can use a slight damp cotton cloth to remove the residue. Glass cleaner is not recommended as it can run into tiny openings and ruin the inside of your watch mechanisms.

If your watch is not water resistant and you accidentally get your watch wet it is extremely important to dry it off immediately with a cotton towel. If the inside gets wet you can try removing the watch face or back plate and letting the inside air dry before assembling it again.

Watches are great for bringing a new fashion statement into your style so keep them clean and in good working order so you can wear them over and over. A good stainless steel watch should last you many years if properly cleaned and stored after use.

Late Winter and Early Spring Jewelry Trends

With mild winters in most of the country, we are seeing some Spring women's jewelry trends pop up earlier than normal. I think most people are ready for it to be officially declared an early Spring so why not get in the mood now. Let's take a look at what is on the forefront of fashion.

Right now, we are seeing teens and young adult women wearing super cute flower rings. Not only are they sporting them on their fingers but also pinning matching or coordinating flowers to their handbags, shoes and even pinning them into their hair!

Classic Flowers can also be found on chunky bold necklaces in solid colors,  perfectly blending with casual, evening out or business wear. It's the perfect accessory to transition a favorite basic with up to the minute style.

The colors of spring are so gorgeous with wonderful fresh natural colors. Lovely robins egg blue, blush pink, fabulous tangerine, harvest yellow, lilac, oatmeal and avocado green are must haves for this upcoming spring season. These colors can't help but make you look and feel great coming out of the dreary rain and snow of winter.

These lovely Flower pieces are found in Spring colored enamel, plastic and wooden jewelry. You can match them with trendy flowered tops and dresses seen on the runways and magazine covers. You just can't go wrong with this jewelry trend and it sure does brighten up your winter jewelry wardrobe as we move into the refreshing colors of Spring fashion!

Tall Jewelry Boxes for Women: Best Styles for Necklaces

Jewelry boxes come in several different varieties and styles. However, when it comes to storing necklaces the best jewelry boxes are the tall ones. The reason for this is that you should store jewelry item in the same way you wear them. Necklaces hang around your neck, and they are best stored in a hanging position, which is very easy to do in tall jewelry boxes.

An example of an ideal jewelry box for necklaces is a tall cabinet for women in cherry finish. Measuring 38 3/4 inches high, 12 1/2 inches wide and 17 inches long, it is a piece of furniture that will add to the decor of any bedroom, as well as provide ideal storage for all kinds of jewelry.

This box has six drawers, twenty two double necklace hooks, concealed side closets, and is a perfect choice for someone with a large collection of necklaces.

If you want to get a tall jewelry box in a middle price range, and would like a black finish to match the decor of a bedroom then a good choice is the Black Java Jewelry Armoire.

It features a black java finish, a lift lid with an interior mirror, a top compartment with a central ring roll flanked by six open section. Four open drawers provide space for a wide variety of jewelry items and dual necklace doors open up with hooks for six necklaces on each side. Its cabriolet legs and scalloped front apron give it a French Provincial look.

A completely different look is found in the dresser top rustic antique walnut jewelry armoire. It is crafted in an upright armoire design, perfect for organizing necklaces. The twin necklace closet door fornts feature routed panel detailing and inside you will find three necklace hooks on each door plus twin interior catch panels.

This tall jewelry box armoire also features a lift lid with full interior mirror. The top compartment has centralized ring rolls and four additional open jewelry storage sections. The three drawers are open with no dividers and there is one drop down ring roll drawer for your beautiful rings.

As you can see from the three examples that I have given above, most of the tall jewelry boxes are usually in the armoire style. They provide tangle-free storage space for necklaces as well as space for a variety of other jewelry pieces, including rings, bracelets, earrings and pendants. You can choose a jewelry box with swing out sides or a necklace drop in a dresser top or floor standing design. A dresser top mini armoire or floor standing jewelry box armoire is the best solution to organize a large collection of jewelry, necklaces, and accessories.

If you are interested in a tall jewelry box out of consideration for necklace storage then you should also consider the number of hooks, and look for double hooks in dresser boxes and for double rows of hooks in standing armoires. If you consider the decor of the room where the jewelry box will be placed, and the type of jewelry in the collection you will be able to find the box that is just right for you or your gift recipient.

Winter 2012 Bracelet Stacking Trend

Some jewelry trends are hot and then fizzle away but this year we are seeing one favorite trend continue to grow and grow. The Bracelet stacking has gone crazy. You will see teenagers, young adult women, middle-aged women and even senior women sporting around this jewelry trend throughout the winter 2012 fashion season. Even on the Golden Globe awards, actresses wore 3-5 and more bracelets of various colors, stacked beautifully showing some gorgeous colors and enhancing their dresses.

Here are some tips how you can get the look!

* You can purchase several bracelets of varying widths...from thin chain styles to chunky bangle bracelets.

* Purchase bracelets made from varying materials from fashion metals, wood, enamel, plastic and everything in between. Really mix up those materials for a unique & customized look.

* When it comes to stacking your bracelets you want a minimum of 3 bracelets but 5 is preferred and you can stack up as many as you would like to wear on a single wrist! We have seen Hollywood stars stacking up as many as 10 beautiful bracelets on one single wrist!

* You can sport bracelets all from one color family or mix them up for coordinating and contrasting looks. There are really no rules when it comes to color so wear whatever colors or looks you like best to show your own unique style and look.

A fabulous way to show off this look is to take a simple dress in a solid color like black and bring in pops of color through the bracelet stacking. Or you can bring in a combination of glitz through rhinestones or crystals and colored gemstones. Pair it with some matching earrings and you are rocking the look!

Bracelet stacking is a fun and elegant way to wear your jewelry and one that we think will be around for a while, so enjoy it!

How to Repair a Broken Pin or Brooch

We all love purchasing and wearing various pins and brooches and over time the pin back mechanism can become damaged or even break. If this has happened to you then you know how frustrating and expensive it can be to have it fixed. Today, we are going to tell you how you can quickly, easily and affordably fix it yourself!

Most pins and brooches have a flat-backed bar pin as it's pinning mechanism and these can easily be purchased at most local craft or jewelry supply stores for just a few dollars. You will also need some good thread, wire or jeweler's glue depending on the type of pin you are repairing. Take a look at the back of your pin before you go shopping for repair supplies.

Here is what to look for on the back. Was it sewn on with wire or strong thread? If so, you will need to purchase a similar product. Was it glued on? If so, you will need to purchase some jewelers glue.

Using your hands or needle nose pliers you will want to remove the old pin back gently and carefully. Once it has been completely removed and any residue cleaned off you can begin your repair. If you are sewing a new pin back on we recommend that you use good carpet thread (it's thicker than sewing thread) or use flexible sewing wire. If you are worried about it falling off, you can add a drop or two of jeweler's glue to secure your thread/wire and let it dry for 3-4 days before wearing it.

If you just want to remove the old broken pin back and put a new one on with some strong jeweler's glue, you can do that too! (Do not use craft glue or household glue...you need good quality strong adhesive glue.) Let it dry according to package instructions before wearing your newly repaired pin.

Large Jewelry Boxes for Women: How to Shop for Large Jewelry Boxes

Jewelry boxes are available in all sizes and range from small travel cases and dresser top boxes to large floor-standing jewelry armoires. If you are about to purchase a jewelry box you might want to look into the large sizes, as your jewelry collection is sure to grow with each year. A large jewelry box is one that is usually more than 14 inches wide or high.

Many of the large boxes are dresser top armoires. A typical example is the Diva model made by Reed and Barton. It has five drawers with compartments for earrings, rings, bracelets and pendants as well as two side compartments that are ideal for storing necklaces. With a dark mahogany finish it will also make a contribution to your bedroom's decor.

Another box in the same category is a 15 inch high, six drawer box by Seya. It has four drawers with storage dividers and a top section that locks to protect your valuables.

In addition, the top section has seven ring rolls. With two swing-out necklace doors with four hooks on each side and a full mirror in the lid, this is a large, multi-purpose box that can handle the needs for storing a large and varied collection.

The next category of large jewelry boxes are the huge, oversized dresser top chest styles. A good example is the Empress walnut jewelry chest by Mele. It measures in with a length of 18 1/2 and width of 9 1/2 and is 11 inches high. It has a warm walnut finish and features seven divided sections on top. It also has a built in mirror.

A special feature is a hidden necklace drop with 12 hooks. There are six drawers, one double drawer in the middle, one ring drawer, one with four equal sections and two open drawers. The bottom drawer has eight equal sections, and the whole chest is lined with a cocoa suede-like fabric which prevents scratching and damage to your jewelry.

Another category of the large jewelry boxes are leather train cases and jewelry trunks. A good example of a jewelry trunk is the huge leather jewelry trunk by Morelle. Measuring an impressive 21 inches in length, 11 1/2 inches wide and 10 inches high it is crafted of genuine leather with a black croc finish.

Fully lined to cushion and protect, it has 16 separate drawers and tons of storage for all kinds of jewelry plus it has LED lights above the mirror that light up when the lid is opened. A secure lock and key keep an entire collection of jewelry secure. Also included is a travel case for additional storage and traveling with jewelry.

Finally, you can also look at a floor standing armoire. As the name suggests these are not placed on the dresser top but are independent pieces of furniture. A good example is the traditional oak-finished jewelry armoire offered by Mele. Measuring-in with a length of 13 inches and a width of 10 inches and a height of 24 inches, this is an elegant piece of oak furniture that features a lid with interior mirror, a top compartment with central roll section flanked by six open sections, four open drawers and dual necklace doors that house six hooks each, plus catch panels.

In case you have a large and growing jewelry collection but do not have enough space to accommodate a large jewelry chest, there are ways to handle this problem. Consider getting a medium size dresser top jewelry chest and supplement this storage with hanging jewelry organizers or lined jewelry storage boxes.

The boxes which I mentioned above can be found on the Chasing Treasure website. So, take a look at your jewelry collection and choose the one that fits your needs.

Youthful Ring Trends for Winter

We love watching jewelry trends and seeing what is hot and what is not. Changing jewelry styles from one trend to another doesn't have to be expensive; many times it is simply how you wear your jewelry pieces. Take this trend with rings, for example.

For the winter 2012 fashion and jewelry season we are seeing ring stacking going bigger and better than ever before. Young trend setters love stacking up multiple rings onto one or several fingers at a time. These can be dainty rings, moderately sized rings or big and bold ones that would pack a big visual powerful punch!

To wear your rings in this stacking method, you will want to mix and match your metals, motifs and colors to suit your own unique individual style. This trend is more of what "you" like and less about matching up rings to go along with your current outfit.

If you are really daring and bold with your style then you will want to sport a minimum of 7 rings spread around on 2-3 fingers. You can also keep it simple by stacking 2-3 on a few fingers and as always, wear what is comfortable to you. Right now, colors are big and bold as are metals, so really anything will go as long as you love it.

When not in use, store your rings on a free standing ring roll or inside a lined jewelry case. Many of the come with ring holders inside to help preserve your rings from scratching and damaging other pieces. If your rings have gemstones or crystals, give them a good cleaning once a week to make them sparkle and shine.

Enjoy mixing and matching your rings with this fun trend. The combination of looks you can get will be as great as the compliments you receive. What a great way to warm up your Winter jewelry trend.

Teaching Kids to Care for Their Jewelry

Girls and Boys at a young age can be taught how to take care of their special jewelry pieces with just a little instruction from mom and/or dad.  An easy way to do this is to make up a special jewelry cleaning kit for your children and use it for demonstration purposes and then let them have the cleaning kit (if they are old enough) so that they can clean their jewelry all on their own.

Jewelry Kit Supplies:

You will want to set aside a bit of your time to sit with your child(ren) and talk to them about the importance of cleaning their jewelry the right way along with how to properly store their jewelry when not in use. We recommend a good quality jewelry box and there are many that we sell specifically for children.

Explain to your child that different types of jewelry get cleaned different ways. For example: Fashion jewelry is cleaned differently than sterling silver jewelry and so forth. Gold, Platinum, Sterling Silver, Stainless Steel and Fashion Jewelry are all cleaned a different way. You can see our previous articles,  filed under Jewelry Care, for tips on cleaning these metals.

You will want to demonstrate to your children how to properly clean a variety of types of jewelry or at the very minimum, they type of jewelry they are currently wearing. Let them help you clean a few pieces of jewelry and then during your next session let them demonstrate to you what they previously learned.   Your kids will enjoy learning something new and learning it from you!

Wooden Jewelry Boxes for Women - An Unforgettable Valentine's Day Gift

If you want to express your love to someone, and you really mean it, then you should get a gift that will last for a long time. A wooden jewelry box is a "lifetime" purchase and is as meaningful as the jewelry that is placed inside of it. This article has some guidelines that will help you to select a wooden jewelry box that is perfect for your loved one.

There are three basic factors that should be taken into consideration when you begin your search. First, get an idea of the size of the jewelry collection of your gift recipient. If she has a very large and varied collection, then you will want a larger box and one that has the proper storage areas for rings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and other jewelry items.

The next two factors go hand-in-hand and they are the personal style and the room decor of your sweetheart. Jewelry boxes, chests and armoires range from traditional to contemporary and come in a variety of colors. To give you an idea of the possibilities, let's take a look at a few popular styles.

The "Regal" by Reed and Barton is a classic heirloom mahogany jewelry box handcrafted in a timeless design featuring earring, bracelet and necklace storage. Its top section has four divided jewelry compartments with three generous ring rolls. Then there is a drawer which is divided into 35 earring compartments. The bottom drawer is divided and can accommodate bracelets and pins. The lid contains necklace hooks with a shirred pocket. This box can handle a varied jewelry collection and is elegant looking. It lists for $260 but with some smart shopping you can get it for around $200.

A completely different look can be found in the White Jewelry Armoire which is a stand-alone piece of furniture. With Queen Anne inspired drawer pulls plus a mirrored lid, lined jewelry storage and aged white finish, this is a jewelry armoire which is ready to store all types of jewelry and will blend with traditional and vintage decor.

It features a lift lid with mirror with a divided top section with ring storage, swing out necklace sides with three large hooks per side and six gliding drawers. It lists for $450 but with special offers you can get it for less than $300.

Great jewelry boxes last not only for the lifetime of the first user, but are often handed down from generation to generation. They are passed down from mother to daughter or grandmother to granddaughter and are true heirlooms. Heirloom jewelry chests are solidly crafted in a variety of woods including ash, popular, mahogany, maple or teak, or from quality wood composities with rare wood veneers such as burlwood, bubinga, ebony or sapeli.

Speaking of woods let's conclude with a consideration of the different finishes that are available on the most popular jewelry boxes. Cherry is a popular finish and many boxes are constructed with other hard woods and then given a cherry finish.  Mahogany is another wood finish that is reddish brown. This dark wood has a strait grain and is free of voices and pockets. If you polish the wood, over time you will get a beautiful reddish sheen. Another popular finish is walnut. Walnut boxes have a rich brown color and their traditional feel allows them to blend with many styles of decor. As with cherry, it is very rare to find a solid walnut jewelry box, and most walnut jewelry boxes will be constructed out of hardwood with a walnut finish applied.  If it's a contemporary look you're after, then a wooden jewelry box finished in espresso will blend with modern decor.

Consider all of these factors and then select a jewelry box that will be prized for years to come.

All About the Amethyst - Birthstone for February

The birthstone for the month of February is the beautiful Amethyst gemstone which comes in various shades of purple, ranging from a very pale purple shade clear up to a very intense deep, dark purple. The Amethyst is considered to be a semi-precious gemstone and is a member of the quartz family of stones.

On the hardness scale an amethyst comes in at round a 7 so it is a great gemstone to have in your jewelry wardrobe for daily wear. As with all semi-precious gemstones you will want to take care of your Amethyst jewelry properly so that it will last for years to come.

When it comes to purchasing Amethyst jewelry many collectors look for the gemstone in the dark purple shades because those shades are considered ot be more desirable and more valuable. The gemstone is mined locations such as Sri Lanka, Canada, Brazil, United States, Russia, India, and Australia and in a few other places in smaller deposits.

The Amethyst is a popular gemstone to own because its rich color makes such a gorgeous pop when worn. A beautiful drop necklace would look fabulous with a V cut little black dress or blouse. An amazing chunky Amethyst bracelet would look terrific paired with some simple bangles so you can show off the pure color.

No matter how you wear your Amethyst, you will love its classic look and the multiple ways that you can wear this gemstone.

Cleaning and Caring for Adalusite Jewelry and Gemstones

Over the past decade or so many jewelry and gemstone collectors have fallen in love with the gemstone known as Andalusite but many of these fans are unsure on how to clean and care for their jewelry made with this semi-precious gemstone. Because this gem comes in on the hardness scale at 6 1/2 to 7 1/2, it does have a special handling for cleaning.

Just like any semi-precious gemstone you do need to handle your Andalusite jewelry with some care. Never submerge your jewelry in water or bathing, swimming, showering or washing your hands as water can damage the gemstone and possibly the setting too. Also put your Andalusite jewelry on after you have finished dressing and doing your hair so that the Andalusite does not come into contact with bath products, body products, perfume or hair products as chemicals will damage gemstones and the metal from which your gemstones have been set in.

Your Andalusite jewelry should be cleaned regularly with a mild solution of liquid dish soap (few drops) mixed with a 1/2 cup of tap water. Use a soft brush to scrub around the gemstones to loosen debris and dirt, rinse completely and then towel dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

You can also purchase professionally made gemstone and jewelry cleaner from your local department store or jeweler and follow the directions on the package for cleaning your pieces. If in doubt or if you don't want to put in the effort on cleaning them, take them to your nearest local professional jeweler and let them clean your pieces which only costs a few dollars, or is sometimes complimentary, depending on the jeweler.

What makes this stone special is that Andalusite is a strongly pleiochroic gemstone, meaning it displays different colors when viewed from different directions. This beautiful stone comes in pink, reds, golden, and browns and sometimes in the rarer colors of clear, yellow, green, white or purple.  It is truly a unique gem and it is so beautiful to wear. Enjoy it in your favorite jewelry settings for many years to come.

Men's Pocket Watches Jewelry Trend

Men have been carrying around pocket watches for decades if not hundreds of years as a means to tell time while at home, at play, and of course, at work. This winter we are seeing a resurgence of the men's pocket watch trend in stores and the classic pocket watch is as beautiful as ever.

Today, manufacturers are creating beautiful pieces of art made with brass, gold, stainless steel, sterling silver and from various other metals and materials. Some of these pocket watches can be purchased for a mere $50 and others can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars depending on what materials they are made from. With that said, just about any man can afford to carry around a stylish and functional pocket watch at a comfortable price point.

If you are purchasing a pocket watch for your favorite man it is important to think about his likes, dislikes, hobbies and interests so that you select the right design motif to suit his individual style and needs. You can select plain pocket watches done in a classic masculine design or one that is more elegant that has been engraved or has inlaid gemstones.

If you purchase the pocket watch from a high end jeweler, it is best to get it insured and to acquire a warranty policy on it should it ever become defective or damaged since expensive pocket watches can incur costly repairs in the case of damage.

Caring for your specialty watch should include a lined watch case for storage when it's not in use. A nice valet tray to place your watch on for convenience is a great idea so that it does not get misplaced. Keep it sparkling and lovely with a nice wipe down using a slightly damp cloth followed immediately by a dry cloth. If it is exceptionally dirty, a wipe specified for your metal can help with a more intense cleaning. Take care not to use any treated wipes on the crystal.

Trends come and go, but this trend for men's pocket watches is a beautiful resurgence for a lovely work of art that should be around for decades more.  If you have been lucky enough to inherit a family heirloom pocket watch, now is the time to use it. Enjoy!

4 Tips for Cleaning Jewelry

If you're like me, you love to wear different fine and fashion jewelry during different seasons.  When the season comes to a close, I tend to stash those pieces away until the following year and often times do so without giving them a good cleaning before storing them away in my jewelry box.

If you treasure your jewelry like I do, it is important to give every jewelry item worn often, a good cleaning now and then especially when you are putting away seasonal jewelry that will be stored for any length of time before being worn again.

Here is what you should be doing with jewelry that will be stored away for the next year.

* Inspect each piece of jewelry for damage, broken clasps, loose stones etc. Any piece that has damage should be repaired right away so it is ready for wearing the following year.

* Clean each piece of jewelry according to how it has been made.  Fashion jewelry can be cleaned with a little soap & water or commercial fashion jewelry cleaner. Sterling silver should be polished with an anti tarnish polishing cloth and gold jewelry should be cleaned with a cleaner that has been specifically made for gold jewelry.

* Never toss your jewelry into your jewelry box so that they are lying on top of one another. Jewelry should be stored in a lined compartment of a jewelry box and in a single layer so that other jewelry pieces are not touching it nor scratching it up. Necklaces should be hung.

* If you have a lot of jewelry specific to any one season, consider giving them their own jewelry storage case or jewelry box.

* Do not store jewelry in plastic storage bags as the bags offer no scratch & dent protection and the chemicals in plastic materials can actually cause damage to your fine and fashion jewelry over time.  Satin or velvet is best.

It's easy to keep your favorite seasonal jewelry nice and ready for the next year. Take 5 minutes before storing your jewelry and you will enjoy your lovely jewelry for a long time.

All about Amazonite Gemstone Jewelry

Amazonite Jewelry is not something you find readily available out in the jewelry marketplace but if you look online at reputable jewelry stores you should be able to find it with ease. Not a common stone by any means but it is considered to be affordable.

It is named after the Amazon River in Brazil but has never been found or mined from that area. It is believed to be named after the river due to the beautiful green shades of stone that the gem is cut from which resemble the shades found in the rainforest that runs along the Amazon River. On the Mohs scale it comes in at a hardness of 6 to 6.5, which is a bit soft and makes it vulnerable to scratches or pitting when not properly handled or stored.

Cleaning Amazonite Jewelry: You will want to mix 2-3 drops of a mild liquid dish soap with 1/2 cup warm (not hot) tap water and use this solution with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth to clean your jewelry pieces. Always towel dry with a clean, soft, lint-free dry cloth. Do not use ultra-sonic jewelry cleaner or chemical jewelry cleaners to clean your Amazonite jewelry pieces as these will damage the stones.

You never want to wear your Amazonite jewelry while bathing, swimming, showering or washing your hands as water will damage the stones. In addition, put your jewelry on after you have finished dressing as bath products, body products, perfume and hair products will damage the stones and the metal to which they have been set in.

Take care when storing this jewelry and all of your precious pieces so they do not lie on top of other jewelry items and scratch or mar the jewelry. With good care, you can enjoy wearing your beautiful and unique Amazonite for a long time.
