Tips to Clean and Care for Mens Cufflinks Part 2

Men's cufflinks may seem like an old style jewelry accessory to some, but they are still a classic choice for men that enjoy French Cuff Shirts and the elegance that they bring. Caring for them is a bit different. We had brought you some tips to clean and care for mens cufflinks previously, dealing mainly with metals. Today we are going to look at a few other styles of cufflinks for care tips.

Cufflinks with Genuine Gemstones - If your cufflinks contain genuine gemstones you will want to use a solution of 2-3 drops of mild liquid dish washing soap with 1/2 cup of tap water to clean around the stones using a soft brush or clean cloth. You can also purchase jewelry cleaner at your local department store or jeweler that is specifically made for cleaning jewelry with genuine gemstones. Always towel dry after cleaning your cufflinks.

Gold or Silver Plated Cufflinks and Fashion Jewelry Cufflinks - When cleaning cufflinks that have been plated in gold or silver you do need to be extra careful when cleaning them. Using a brush is not recommended when cleaning them with a mild liquid soap. You will want to use a soft cloth because a brush can damage the plating or scratch it off.  Make sure to towel dry them after cleaning. You do NOT want to use harsh chemicals to clean plated jewelry as the chemicals can damage the shine of the metal or pit the metal. Use caution with any cleaning technique you use.

How to Clean Men's Metal Cufflinks

Take time to clean them regularly and store them properly and your cufflinks will look pristine for a very long time.

Here is how to care for your solid metal cufflinks quickly and easily.

Sterling Silver Cufflinks - Mix up a solution of 2-3 drops of a mild liquid dish washing soap with 1/2 cup of tap water. Use a soft brush or cotton cleaning cloth and clean away any dirt and debris. Rinse completely and towel dry with a soft cotton cloth. If your cufflinks have tarnish to the metal you will need to use and anti-tarnish polishing cloth to remove it and to polish them up.

Genuine Gold Cufflinks - Purchase a commercial jewelry cleaner that is made specifically for genuine gold jewelry. Follow the directions on the packaging and clean accordingly. If this makes you nervous or you just don't have the time to clean them, you can take them to your local jeweler and have them clean the cufflinks professionally for you.

Stainless Steel Cufflinks - Make a solution of water and mild dish washing soap (2-3 drops of liquid soap and 1/2 cup of tap water) and use a soft brush or clean cloth to remove the debris and dirt. Rinse completely and towel dry.
