Princess Di's Ring: Courtesy of RingswithLove |
In honor of Mother’s Day in May, let’s look at two very famous mothers and the jewelry that they share. Diana, Princess of Wales received a sapphire ring as her engagement present from Prince Charles in 1981.
Worth over $38,000, the ring is a 12-carat oval-shaped Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds set in 18-karat white gold. It has been said that Diana selected the sapphire engagement ring because it reminded her of her mother’s ring, too. After her untimely death, the ring returned to Prince Charles, and Diana’s son Prince William selected it as a memento of his mother. In 2010, he used the ring to propose to Kate Middleton. Now that Kate is a Royal Mother to baby George, the sapphire ring continues its legacy of adorning beautiful and loved mothers in the royal family. Heirloom jewelry like this, no matter what its price, needs to be preserved and kept safe when not in use.
